Clutch Fourth Quarter Lifts Hatters Over Bethune-Cookman

Stetson Outscores Bethune 21-11 in 4th Quarter

DeLand, Fla. – Brittney Chambers hit two huge fourth quarter 3-pointers and Stetson's defense was stingy down the stretch as the Hatters rallied for a 63-60 win over visiting Bethune-Cookman Wednesday night at the Edmunds Center.

The Hatters (3-0) trailed by as many as 13 points with 11 minutes to play, but two late 3s in the third quarter and a 21-11 run in the fourth kept Stetson undefeated on the season.

"I like that we came through some adversity," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "I like that we hung in there when things weren't going our way.  I was trying everything.  I went zone. I went big.  Finally we just decided to lock down and go man-to-man."

Chambers first 3-pointer came with 6:33 to play and pulled Stetson to within 49-48.  Moments later, she took a charge on the defensive end, then buried another 3 from the right corner to put Stetson ahead 53-52.  It was Stetson's first lead since early in the first quarter.

"I just knew we needed a big bucket, so it is just something I have to do," Chambers said.  "I have to rise up and make shots when it matters."

The lead changed hands four more times down the stretch, with McKenna Beach's free throws at the 1:51 mark giving Stetson the lead for good.  Brianti Saunders grabbed a clutch offensive rebound with 21 seconds to play and sunk a pair from the line to help put the game out of reach.

"That was huge," Bria said about Saunders' offensive rebound.  "That was the game for the most part.  If she didn't get that rebound the game could have completely turned."

Defensively, the Hatters held the Wildcats (1-2) to 1-for-14 shooting from the floor in the final period.

"I think it was the stops in the fourth quarter (that made the difference)," Bria said.  "We did a much better job of guarding and containing them."

Chambers led the way with 13 points, while Myka Johnson-Matthews scored 12 points and took two charges.

"We don't win this game without Myka," Bria said.  "She was real aggressive on both ends. She was so aggressive from the start of the game."

Saunders scored 12 points, bringing her career total to 1499, and Sarah Sagerer added 10 points and nine rebounds. The Hatters held a 37-33 advantage on the boards.

Stetson will conclude a four-game homestand against Eastern Illinois at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Notes: The seven-point fourth-quarter comeback is the largest comeback by the Hatters under the new quarter system that started last year … Stetson is 73-9 in its last 82 home games ... The Hatters held a 17-2 advantage in second chance points.
