Strong Defensive Effort Lifts Hatters Past Robert Morris

Brianti Saunders leads with 21 points

Miami, Fla. – Brianti Saunders scored a season-high 21 points, 19 of which came in the second half, as Stetson defeated Robert Morris 68-60 Friday afternoon in the first round of the FIU Thanksgiving Tournament.

With the victory, the Hatters improved to 5-1 overall and advanced to Sunday's tournament championship against Weber State.

"Everybody played team defense, and we pushed the ball really well and played together," junior Sarah Sagerer said.  "Robert Morris is a very good team. We are really happy we got a win."

Stetson trailed 21-18 midway through the second quarter, but an 11-2 run to finish the half put Stetson up by six at halftime.

Saunders helped take over in the second half, hitting three times from behind the arc to give Stetson a 15-point cushion.  The Hatters also hit 16-of-20 free throws in the fourth quarter to hold off a late charge by the Colonials (3-3).

"In the second half, we started to hit some shots, which I think really helped us," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "We got open on some 3s and knocked those down. I felt throughout the game our defense was really good.  It was probably our best game of the year so far."

With post players Breana Bey and Kennedi Colclough in foul trouble, Sagerer played a significant role in the victory.  The Hatter junior pulled down 14 rebounds, including 11 on the defensive end, and blocked four shots while playing a career-high 38 minutes.

"I thought Sarah was great defensively for us," Bria said.  "She blocked some shots and got some key rebounds.  She just did a really good job.  I had to put her a little more in the post because of Bey's foul trouble.  That's the thing I love about Sarah is her versatility.  She can do so much for us.  We don't win this game without her."

Brittney Chambers scored 13 points and Bey registered 12 points and five rebounds.  Myka Johnson-Matthews was 4-for-4 from the floor for nine points in 38 minutes of action.

Stetson held a 29-22 advantage on the boards.
