Hatters Hold Off Kennesaw State for First ASUN Win

Brianti Saunders scores 16 in the victory

Kennesaw, Ga. – Brianti Saunders scored a game-high 16 points while playing all 40 minutes as Stetson defeated host Kennesaw State 65-56 Saturday afternoon at the KSU Convocation Center.

The Hatters (12-5, 1-1 ASUN) snapped a mild three-game losing streak and picked up their first conference victory of the season.

Stetson led by 13 at the break, but the Owls (2-14, 1-1) started the second half on a 12-2 surge to pull within three.  The Hatters finished the third quarter on a 5-0 run, then held off KSU in the fourth quarter to earn the victory.

"I think we were fortunate to win," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "I don't think we started the game well and I don't think we started the second half very well.  I thought Kennesaw played very hard."

Saunders scored 13 of her 16 points in first half while hitting three 3-pointers.  Sarah Sagerer joined Saunders in double figures with 14 points to go along with six blocks.  Breana Bey pulled down 10 rebounds.

The Hatters also received several key contributions off the bench as all nine players who played scored in the game.

"We had some different people step up," Bria said.  "I thought Kennedi (Colclough) had a great game.  I thought Ida (Andersson) gave us really good minutes today.  Obviously, Bri gets everybody's attention, and I thought she worked extremely hard today, but it was great to bring those two off the bench and they gave us really good energy."

Stetson shot 42 percent for the game and outrebounded KSU 39-30.  It was the Hatters' 18th consecutive win over the Owls.

Stetson will travel to Nashville, Tenn. to play Lipscomb at 7:30 p.m. Monday night.
