Hatters Announce Changes to Softball Coaching Staff

DeLand, Fla. -- Stetson University softball head coach Frank Griffin has announced that J.J. Payette has been elevated to First Assistant Coach and Franklin Drury has been named the new Volunteer Assistant Coach.

Payette is in her 12th season as an assistant coach at Stetson after completing a four-year playing career for the Hatters (2002-06).  In addition to her on-field coaching duties, Payette is responsible for travel and schedule coordination, academic advising, and serving as Associate Camp Director of Head Coach Frank Griffin's Stetson Fastpitch Academy.

During Payette's coaching tenure, the Hatters have captured two conference championships and averaged over 30 wins per season.  Payette is a Four-Star Master Coach having completed the eight-course curriculum of the National Fastpitch Coaches College (NFCC), and she is a proud member of the Alliance of Women Coaches and the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA).

"J.J.'s communication skills are second to none," Griffin said.  "The way she communicates with players, staff, boosters and alumni - she is just outstanding.  As a coach, she has developed into one of the top coaches in the country in my opinion, and I have seen a lot of them.  I congratulate her on a well-deserved promotion, and I am very happy for her."

Drury begins his first season with the Hatters softball program.  He began coaching in 2006 for the Port Orange (Fla.) Blazers travel team. He served as an assistant coach for four years, during which time the Blazers won a state championship.

Drury then became an assistant coach for Orlando's Central Florida Sting-Black in the summer of 2009. He held an assistant position on the Sting until fall of 2011, when he took over as the program's head coach. During this time, the Sting won several state championships and one national championship - an ASA U18 title in 2012 in Johnson City, Tenn.

"Franklin's knowledge of both defense and hitting are just tremendous," Griffin said.  "The way he relates to the players is outstanding.  We are really happy to have him on board."

The Hatters will continue their fall schedule with two games this week.  Stetson will host Daytona State at 4 p.m. Thursday and St. John's River State at 4 p.m. Friday.  Admission to fall games is free and contests are played at Patricia Wilson Field.
