Hatters Dominate From Start to Finish in Season-Opening Win

McKenna Beach records first career double-double

DeLand, Fla. -- Kennedi Colclough and McKenna Beach each recorded double-doubles as Stetson cruised to a 92-41 season-opening victory over Thomas University Friday afternoon at the Edmunds Center.

Colclough scored 18 points on 7-for-7 shooting from the floor and added 11 boards for her second career double-double.  Beach scored 15 points and dished out a career-high 10 assists for her first double-double.

Brittney Chambers (15 points), Michelle Pruitt (14 points), and Megan Vincent (13 points) also scored in double figures for the Hatters (1-0), who won their season opener for the fourth year in a row.

"It was a really good start for us, but we still have a lot of work to do," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "I thought we did a good job of finding the open man and getting some lay-ups."

The Hatters shot a blistering 62.1 percent from the floor.  In addition to Colclough's perfect line, Pruitt went 6-for-6 and Chambers went 7-for-11.

Defensively, Stetson held Thomas to just 17 first-half points and 21.2 percent shooting for the game.  The Hatters outrebounded the Nighthawks 35-31.

Five players made their Hatter debut: sophomore Jordan Tully, and freshmen Sydney Wagner, Kendall Lentz, Vincent and Pruitt.

Stetson will travel to Austin, Texas to face second-ranked Texas on Sunday.  Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. Eastern Time.

Notes: The four Hatter freshmen who played combined for 38 points … Vincent had seven rebounds, five assists, four steals and two blocks to go along with her 13 points … Stetson had 27 assists as a team … The Hatters led 26-8 at the end of the first quarter and 50-17 at halftime … Brittney Chambers scored in double figures for the seventh game in a row, dating back to last year.
