DeLand, Fla. -- Stetson University volleyball head coach Yang Deng announced the signing Monday of Daytona State transfer Emily DeStaffino (Oviedo, Fla. / Daytona State / Oviedo HS) to a National Letter-of-Intent.
DeStaffino, a 5-10 setter, was a first team all-conference performer as a freshman at Daytona State. She registered 995 assists for the season, averaging 9.95 assists-per-set. She also picked up 190 digs, 40 blocks and 17 aces, and was selected as the team's offensive player of the year.
This past season, DeStaffino increased her assists-per-set average to 10.65, the second-highest total in the Mid-Florida Conference. She also tallied 237 digs, 35 blocks and 22 aces while helping lead the Falcons to a 22-7 record. She was named NJCAA Region 8 Setter of the Week in October.
"Emily is definitely the setter I am looking for," Deng said. "She is very experienced and understands the game well. I really like her demeanor on the court, and her coaches speak very highly of her as a leader. She is someone who is going to be very important to our program next year."
At Oviedo High School, DeStaffino helped guide the Lions to a FHSAA 8A State Championship in 2013. She holds the school record for most assists in a match with 72.
Stetson completed its 2017 season with a record of 3-23.
