Hatters Fall Short Against Providence, 56-45

McKenna Beach earns all-tournament team honors

Savannah, Ga. -- Despite McKenna Beach's career-highs of 18 points and 13 rebounds, Stetson fell 56-45 to Providence Thursday afternoon in the final game of the Savannah Invitational.

The Hatters finished the tournament with a 1-2 record and fall to 3-3 on the season.

"It was not a good game for us," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "I felt like Providence came out and executed better than we did.  We just let them do what they wanted to, especially in the post.  We did a great job on their shooters, and that was the gameplan, I just felt like their bigs hurt us."

Fresh off Wednesday's dramatic 85-71 win over Florida, the Hatters got off to a hot start against Providence on Thursday.  Stetson hit four 3-pointers in the opening 10 minutes and led the Friars (4-2) 20-6 at the end of the first quarter.

Stetson managed just 25 points, however, over the final three quarters.  Providence chipped away and eventually grabbed the lead at the end of the third quarter.  Stetson regained a 39-38 advantage with eight minutes to go, but the Friars outscored the Hatters 18-6 the rest of the way.

Stetson shot just 30.6 percent for the game and made just 15 field goals, six of which were from behind the arc.

"Offensively, we had some opportunities but we just didn't stick the ball in," Bria said. "We have to hit open shots, we have to hit lay-ups, and we did not do that today."

Beach was 6-for-8 from the floor and 4-for-4 from 3-point range and earned Savannah Invitational all-tournament team honors.

Chambers added 14 points and hit a pair of 3s for the Hatters.

Stetson will return home to host High Point at 7 p.m. Monday.

Notes:
  • Stetson was 41-for-46 from the free throw line during the tournament (.891)
  • McKenna Beach recorded her second career double-double, and her first with points and rebounds.
  • Brittney Chambers has scored in double figures in 12 straight games
  • Stetson's defense had its best quarter this season holding Providence to six points in the opening 10 minutes.
