Hatters Sign Swedish Star Bergevi

Stetson men's tennis today announced the signing of Linus Bergevi (Basatd, Sweden) to a National Letter-of-Intent to continue his academic and tennis career at Stetson.

Bergevi is the third member of Stetson's 2017 recruiting class, joining Malik Bhatnagar (Ottawa, Ontario) and Antoine Sanchez (Sarasota, Fla.) who signed last November.

"Linus is a very enthusiastic guy," Stetson head coach Christophe Noblet said. "He steps on the court with a smile on his face and people gravitate around him. He is very much looking forward to being part of our team.

"Tennis-wise, he has big weapons with his forehand and serve, and loves to be on the offensive and in control of the rally. He was highly recruited as many coaches realized that he has tremendous potential, since he just turned 18 about two weeks ago. He is an ambitious young man and he is looking forward to making an impact on the team."

The No. 2-ranked junior player in Sweden, Bergevi won the 2015 Stockholm SALK Open, the world's largest junior tennis tournament. In addition to serving as a member of Sweden's Junior Davis Cup team, Bergevi also has represented Sweden at the European Championships in both indoor and outdoor events, winning a bronze medal indoors and helping Sweden qualify for the World Championships outdoors.

Bergevi also has multiple gold medals in Swedish National Championships play in doubles, and also reached the semifinals of Bastad Tennis while playing in a higher age group.

"With the addition of Linus, I cannot be more excited about our 2018 recruiting class," Noblet said. "We are adding three quality individuals and players to an already talented returning squad. With nine players, the roster depth will certainly be an asset that we intend to utilize. The guys did a tremendous job this past season laying down the foundation for a strong team oriented culture, and they are looking forward to build upon that moving forward."
