Morganton, NC – The Stetson women's golf team, led by junior Giulia Vandenberg, got off to a good start on Sunday in the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate, hosted by Appalachian State University.
The Hatters posted an opening round score of 308 to tie with the host team and Elon for fourth place. Jacksonville State has the lead after the first round of the two-day tournament as a result of a 303 in the first round.
Vandenberg and JSU's Natalia Azcue were the only players to tame the course at the Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club. Both players finished the opening round with even par scores of 72 to share the first round lead. High Point's Tan Cheeranont is one shot off the pace with a 73 in the first round.
Of the 83 players in the tournament, 47 posted scores of 80 or higher on the first day of play.
The Hatters' Kristine Odaiyar it tied for 14th after the opening round following an opening round score of 77. Paige Kemp is tied for 24th, one shot further back after an opening round 78.
Sophomores Eilidh Watson (81) and Carolin Schart (83) were among the many players to struggle through the first round.
Play in the tournament will conclude on Monday with a shotgun start scheduled for 9 a.m.
Following the completion of the tournament in North Carolina the Hatters will turn their attention toward the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship, which will be played on the Watson Course at the Reunion Resort near Kissimmee. That event will be played April 10-12.
