Women’s Golf Adds Two for 2019-20

Stetson University women's golf coach Danielle Shelburne announced the signing of two players who will join the program for the 2019-20 academic year.

The two newest Hatters are Yu-Wen "Wendy" Hsiao of Taipei City, Taiwan, and Katelyn David of St. Charles, Ill.

"I am excited to add Katelyn and Wendy to the Women's Golf Program for the fall 2019," Shelburne said. "Both Katelyn and Wendy will make an immediate impact on our team."

A product of the Primacy Collegiate Academy in Taipei, Hsiao is no stranger to playing golf in the United States. In July she earned a third place finish at the FGC World Series Global Cup at Twin Oaks Golf Course in San Marcos, Calif. She earned a sixth place finish later in July at the U.S. Kids Golf Teen World Championship at Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club in North Carolina.

"Wendy is a complete player," Shelburne said. "She drives the ball well, has a strong short game and is mentally tough. She will make an immediate impact and should find the lineup as a freshman.

"I had the opportunity to watch Wendy play at both at the Publix Doral Junior Tournament in Doral and in Palm Springs at the FCG World Championship. Being from Taiwan, Wendy has had the opportunity to play worldwide, which will help her adjust quickly to collegiate golf."

Hsiao said there were two primary reasons that she chose Stetson over schools like the University of San Francisco, Boston College and Georgetown.

"First, the weather in Florida is similar to Taiwan, which means I can play golf all year and will not be affected by low temperatures or snow," Hsiao said. "Second, Stetson University is a Division I University with very strong academics, and that is really important to me. I want to be a model for young Taiwanese golfers to follow, to help them accomplish their dreams."

David comes to Stetson from Waxhaw, North Carolina, where she will graduate this spring after spending her prep playing career at St. Charles North HS in St. Charles, Ill. She led her team to a state title this fall, earning All-Conference honors for the second time. She finished second in the state championship tournament, one of eight top 10 finishes for her this year.

"Katelyn will make an impact as a strong leader and hard worker, both on the golf course and in the classroom," Shelburne said. "She has not played golf competitively for as long as most junior golfers, but her game has improved greatly over the last couple of years and I believe she will peak during her college years at Stetson."

David, who has former prep teammates playing at Duke, Western Kentucky, Illinois-Chicago and Minnesota, said she took a look at Stetson because her swing coach is former Hatter Connie DeMattia.

"I heard about Stetson from him and then, when I visited campus, I fell in love with it," David said.

The two newest Hatters will join a Stetson squad next fall that will return every player from the 2018-19 team.
