Hatters Announce 2019 Schedule

Stetson to Play 18 Matches Against Top 20 Opponents

DeLand, Fla. -- Five non-conference tournaments plus a trip to California highlight the 2019 Stetson University beach volleyball schedule, which was released on Thursday.

The two-time defending ASUN Conference champion Hatters will play one of the toughest schedules the program has ever assembled.  Stetson will face seven of the top nine opponents ranked in the final 2018 AVCA beach poll, including matchups against defending national champion UCLA and national runner-up Florida State.  In addition, 18 of the 33 matches on the schedule are against 2018 AVCA Top 20 teams.

Stetson will then head west during Spring Break for four matches in California.  The Hatters will face Long Beach State and Loyola Marymount on March 6 in Long Beach, followed by matches against Long Beach State and two-time NCAA champion USC on March 7 in Los Angeles.

On March 16-17, Stetson will travel to Columbia S.C. for the Gamecock Grand Slam.  The Hatters will square off against UAB, Eastern Kentucky, Georgia State, and South Carolina during the weekend tournament.

The Stetson duals will be played March 19 at the Cooper Beach Courts with Florida Atlantic and Southeastern University making the trip to DeLand.

The Hatters will then face Austin Peay, Arizona, and Florida State in Tallahassee on March 22-23.

Stetson's next tournament will be played March 29-30 in South Beach where the Hatters will meet four Top 20 opponents from a year ago - UCLA (No. 1), LSU (No. 6), FIU (No. 9), and Tulane (No. 17), plus TCU.  Stetson will again face FAU and FIU in its final non-conference tournament on April 12 in Boca Raton.

In ASUN competition, the Hatters will play two duals each against four divisional opponents - FGCU, UNF, Jacksonville, and Mercer.  The ASUN's other division features Austin Peay, Coastal Carolina, Jacksonville State, Morehead State and North Alabama.  The two division winners will earn an automatic bid to the ASUN Championship with four wild cards joining the field.

For the third year in row, Stetson will host the ASUN Championship at the Cooper Beach Courts on April 18-20.  The Hatters went a perfect 3-0 last year to win their second straight title and fourth championship in the past five years.

The NCAA Championship returns to Gulf Shores, Ala. on May 3-5.  The Hatters will seek their second NCAA berth following an appearance in the inaugural championship in 2016.

Admission is free to all home beach volleyball matches.  Preseason practice starts next week.  Head Coach Kristina Hernandez returns for her sixth season.
