Hatters Win Low-Scoring Affair at NKU, 54-45

Brianti Saunders leads with 18 points

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY. -- Stetson used a 10-0 run early in the fourth quarter to defeat Northern Kentucky 54-45 in a defensive battle Wednesday afternoon at BB&T Arena.

Brianti Saunders led the way with 18 points as the Hatters improved their record to 7-1 on the season.

"It was real ugly," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said. "The first half we didn't execute on either end, offensively or defensively.  We just had a hard time getting into a flow.  I thought the second half we played a lot better.  I thought we guarded much better and converted."

A crowd of 5,332 young fans from local elementary schools saw the teams battle to a 25-25 halftime tie.  Stetson fell behind 33-29 midway through the third quarter, but an 11-3 surge put the Hatters up by four going into the fourth.

After NKU (2-4) cut the lead back down to two, the Hatters went on a 10-0 run with several baskets coming in transition off of Norse turnovers.

"I thought that was the difference in the game," Bria said about the Hatters' second-half defense. "I felt like we turned them over and converted on the turnovers.  We did a much better job of containing them and not letting them go where they want, and we rebounded better.  I thought our defense was very effective."

Stetson was held 20 points below its season scoring average, but Saunders stepped up with several key baskets and assists during the second half run.

"(Brianti) is the backbone of the team," Bria said.  "We go how she goes, and she was huge for us today."

Breana Bey added 12 points and Brittney Chambers scored 10.  Sarah Sagerer picked up seven rebounds and McKenna Beach collected three steals.

Kasey Uetrecht scored 16 points to lead the Norse.

Stetson is now 3-1 on its six-game road swing.  The Hatters will visit High Point at 2 p.m. Saturday.
