Hatters Fall to Chattanooga on Milestone Night for Saunders

Chattanooga, Tenn. -- It was a milestone night Monday for the Stetson women's basketball program as Brianti Saunders became the Hatters all-time leading scorer, but Chattanoga came away with a 66-55 victory at McKenzie Arena.

The loss snapped the Hatters' four-game win streak.

With four minutes to play in the third quarter, Saunders hit a 3-pointer out of the left corner to record her 1,618th career point.  She surpassed previous record holder Sasha Sims, who scored 1,617 points from 2010-14.

"It is always to tough to talk about after a loss, but I am honored to get it," Saunders said.  "It is not an easy milestone to reach, but I don't take full responsibility for it.  I thank my former teammates, I thank my teammates now, and I thank my coaches.  I couldn't have done it by myself."

Saunders and Sims were teammates when Saunders was a freshman in the 2013-14 season.  The two remain good friends today.

"I think Sasha did a great job, am I am just glad to be able to pass her." Saunders said.

For the game, Stetson (8-2) led by as many as seven in the second quarter, but a 20-2 Chattanooga run put the Mocs (5-6) in front to stay.  The Hatters closed the gap to four in the fourth quarter but would pull no closer.

Stetson shot 47 percent for the game while Chattanooga shot 44 percent. However, the Mocs owned a 36-27 advantage on the glass.

"I thought the key was rebounding," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "We knew it was a key to the game, and I disappointed in our rebounding effort."

Saunders led the Hatters with 11 points, while Myka Johnson-Matthews and Kennedi Colclough scored 10 points apiece.

The Hatters traveled over 6,000 miles on their six-game road swing and finished the trip with a 4-2 mark.

Stetson will return home to face Warner at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, beginning a four-game homestand.
