Hatters Fall to FGCU in ASUN Opener

Breana Bey scores 22 points on 9-of-10 shooting

DeLand, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast hit 12 3-pointers including six by Rosemarie Julien in an 84-71 victory over Stetson Saturday afternoon at the Edmunds Center.

Despite a 37-20 advantage on the boards, the Hatters (11-5, 0-1) fell in the ASUN opener for both teams.

A strong inside game from Breana Bey and Sarah Sagerer helped spark Stetson to 33-28 lead late in the second quarter.  However, a quick 11-0 run by FGCU gave the Eagles a six-point lead at the break.

"I thought the run they went on at the end of the first half and our foul trouble hurt us," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "It was a bit disruptive to some of our rotations.  Offensively, I don't really have any complaints besides the turnovers.  We just have to a better job of getting in the lane and being more balanced."

Stetson scored the first six points of the second half to force a 39-39 tie, but FGCU answered with a 10-0 run to take the lead for good.

For the game, Stetson shot 54 percent from the floor and 92 percent from the free throw line.  FGCU (12-6, 1-0), meanwhile, shot 44 percent from behind the arc (12-for-27) as Julien led all scorers with 36 points.

"We have to do what we are supposed to do to deserve to win," Bria said.  "If we don't guard, we don't deserve to win.  We have to continue to get better.  We need some people to play more consistently for 40 minutes."

Bey led Stetson with 22 points on 9-of-10 shooting.  Brittney Chambers scored 13 points and Brianti Saunders and Sagerer scored a dozen points each.

Stetson will continue ASUN play at Kennesaw State next Saturday.
