Hatters Surge Past Florida 85-71

Sydney Wagner scores 20 to help lead the attack

Savannah, Ga. -- Sydney Wagner is only five games into her Stetson career, but Wednesday's performance was one she won't soon forget.

The Hatter freshman went 8-for-10 from the field, burying all four of her 3-point attempts, and scored a season-high 20 points as Stetson rolled to an 85-71 victory over Florida Wednesday night on the second day of the Savannah Invitational.

Kennedi Colclough scored 23 points and added a career-high 13 rebounds for the Hatters (3-2), who defeated the Gators (2-3) for the first time since 1988.

"We just came out blazing in the second half," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "I thought Sydney just took over the game in the first half.  She hit some big shots, and she can do that.  She can score a lot of points in a hurry.  I thought Kennedi had an incredible game, both rebounding and making plays.  It was huge, but I thought everyone contributed.  We did a really good job (tonight)."

Stetson shot 53.7 percent from the field and 57.9 percent from behind the arc, hitting 11-of-19 3-point attempts.  Brittney Chambers nailed three 3s and scored 17 points while McKenna Beach added 13 points and seven assists.

Wagner scored 15 of her points in the second quarter alone as Stetson vaulted into the lead.  Her first 3 broke a 17-17 tie, and after Florida led briefly at 32-31, Wagner connected again from long range to give Stetson a 34-32 lead.  She then knocked down two more shots in the final minute of the half, and Colclough hit a short jumper at the buzzer to put Stetson up 44-36 at the break.

"The game was really intense," Colclough said.  "I feel like we came out with a great win. Syd had a big game, everyone had a big game. Credit to Florida, they have a good team, but we were the better team today."

The Hatters took off in the third quarter, outscoring the Gators 25-12 to put the game out of reach.  Stetson hit 7-of-8 free throws in the fourth quarter to help seal the win.

"I thought the third quarter we played nearly perfect, both offensively and defensively," Bria said.  "Everything was really clicking in the third quarter."

Florida had won 14 straight in the series dating back to Nov. 29, 1988.  It is also Stetson's first win over any SEC team during that same time.

"I think it is huge for our program.  I think it is huge for Stetson University," Bria said.  "I think it is a good win for us, but we don't get to enjoy it for very long because we play a very good Providence team (Thursday)."

The Hatters will face Providence at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.  The Friars (3-2) have defeated Savannah State and Wright State in the tournament.

Notes:
  • One day after making just one 3-pointer, the Hatters hit a season-high 11 3s on Wednesday
  • McKenna Beach went 8-for-8 from the free throw line.  The Hatters were 16-of-19 from the stripe as a team.
  • The last Hatter freshman to score 20+ points in a game was Kennedi Colclough who scored 23 vs. Warner last season.
  • Megan Vincent recorded her seventh block of the season
  • Stetson's biggest lead was 23 early in the fourth quarter.  Florida cut that lead down to eight.
  • The Hatters ended the first half on a 7-0 run and started the second half on a 7-0 run.
