The Stetson women's soccer team played its final game of the 2007 season Wednesday night, a 2-1 loss to East Tennessee State University in the opening round of the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament. It was d?j? vu for the Hatters who dropped a game to ETSU for the second time in ten days under very similar circumstances.
In a home game on October 28 Stetson dominated play and led the Buccaneers in shots 25-9, yet lost the game 3-2 on goal that came in overtime. Tonight at the A-Sun Tournament the Hatters once again controlled the action, led ETSU in shots 25-10, and yet fell victim to a late goal.
ETSU opened the scoring just 3:09 into the game when Jordan Monty crossed a ball into the box and Terri Miller found the net. They completed the scoring at 73:57 when Katie Green set up Monty for what turned out to be the game winner past a sliding Andrea Garavaglia (Webster Groves, MO) in the Hatter goal mouth.
In between Stetson scored its lone goal at 25:15 when sophomore Emily Ware (St. Petersburg, Fla.) took a pass from fellow sophomore Heather Berg (Ft. Myers, Fla.) and blasted a shot into the top right corner. It was the first goal of the season for Ware and the second of her career.
“I have to give credit to their goalkeeper (Rachel VanHorn) who made some huge saves”, said Hatters Head Coach Julie Orlowski.
Of the 25 shots taken by the Hatters, 13 were on goal; 12 were credited as saves for VanHorn. Stetson led the Buccaneers in shots 11-4 in the first half, and 14-6 in the second.
“This is not the way we wanted to send off our seniors”, continued Orlowski. “We are proud of all six of them. We will look to build on this however, and carry the experience into next year.”
Playing in their final game for the Hatters after tremendous four-year careers were seniors Sarah Stock (Deltona, Fla.), Jennifer Hays (Jacksonville Beach, Fla.), Julianne Turnbull (DeLand, Fla.), Kelsey Kramer (Satellite Beach, Fla.), Jessica Spencer (Damascus, MD), and Yvonne Davis (Jacksonville, Fla.).
