Jacksonville, FL ? Despite the hard-fought loss on Sunday, the Stetson women's soccer team continued to improve. The Hatters (1-1-1) dropped its first game of the season 3-1 to an unbeaten Baylor University (4-0-1) team at the Kick Out Cancer Tournament in Jacksonville.
Stetson Head Coach Julie Orlowski was impressed with her team's effort.
“Every game we have played, we've ramped up the intensity and worked even harder”, she said. “If we keep on that pace for the next few games we will be ready for conference play.”
In the first half at 11:32 Baylor's Amanda McGrath opened the scoring after tapping in a cross by Megan Sherrell. It was one of a school-record three assists for Sherrell.
Fifteen minutes later Stetson's standout senior Sarah Stock answered with a goal of her own. She scored at 28:16 with assists by Sophomore Heather Berg and Freshman Tessa Gavilsky. It was Stock's fourth goal of the season in just three games.
“It was another creative goal by Sarah”, said Orlowski. “She is on a goal-a-game pace so far which is nice to see.”
The first half scoring was finished by Baylor's Beckah Brady at 33:13. Brady also scored the game's final tally at 69:29 of the second completing the 3-1 final score.
Although she gave up three goals, freshman goalkeeper Andrea Garavaglia made five saves. Baylor led the Hatters in shots by a 15-9 margin.
Defensively through the midfield, particularly in the second half, Orlowski was impressed with her team's play.
“Kelsey Kramer and Julie Turnbull played very well. They were our players of the game”, she said.
We are on a good pace right now. At 1-1-1 I couldn't be happier at this point in the season”, she added.
Stetson returns to the pitch this weekend, September 14-16, when they travel to Johnson City, Tennessee to play in the ETSU Invitational. They will take on Western Carolina Friday at 1:00 p.m. and Tennessee Tech Sunday at Noon.
