Kennesaw, Ga. - Friday night the Stetson women's soccer team opened its Georgia road trip and its conference season with a 3-0 loss to Kennesaw State. The Hatters are now 4-5-0 overall and 1-0 in the A-Sun.
After an uneventful opening 20 minutes where both teams seemed to struggle to find a rhythm, the Owls (4-3-0, 2-0-0) broke the ice with a goal by Alyssa Mahan. By the time the first half reached its conclusion Caitlin Dingle and Bridget Gaughan had each added a goal and KSU had a 3-0 lead.
"We did not start playing well until the second half. By that time we were down 3-0 and it was too late", said Stetson Head Coach Julie Orlowski.
After being outshot 9-3 in the first half, the Hatters finished even at 5-5, and led the Owls 7-5 in corner kick opportunities in the second.
"Against a good team like Kennesaw State we can not spot them three goals and expect to come back", said Orlowski.
Tessa Gavilsky (Granite City, Ill.) led the visitors with four shots, three of which were on goal. Goalkeeper Andrea Garavaglia (Webster Groves, Mo.) finished with five saves.
"Hopefully we will regroup Sunday against Mercer and come home with three points", added Orlowski. "Hopefully the team that came to play in the second half tonight will show up Sunday."
Stetson plays Mercer University at 2:00 p.m. Sunday and then returns to DeLand for a four-game A-Sun home stand beginning with Campbell on Thursday, October 1 at 7:00 p.m.
