Stetson Trio Named to NSCAA All-South Region Teams

DeLand, Fla. - Three members of the Stetson men's soccer team earned National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-South Region honors, the organization revealed Friday. Junior forward Jonathan Mendoza (Bogota, Colombia) was named to the All-South Region First Team with senior midfielder Gonzalo de Mujica (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and junior defender Luis Ocejo (Mexico City, Mexico) both landing on the Third Team.

Mendoza, the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year and an A-Sun All-Tournament Team honoree, picked up his second straight NSCAA All-South selection after being tabbed to the Third Team in 2010. In 2011, he scored a conference-leading 27 points on 11 goals and five assists with three game-winning goals. Mendoza had three two-goal matches on the year, including in a come-from-behind 3-2 triumph over then 15th-ranked Penn State on September 2 in Columbus, Ohio.

De Mujica served as Stetson's team captain in 2011 and was a First Team All-Atlantic Sun honoree. He ranked second on the Hatters in scoring with 17 points on five goals and a team-high seven assists, scoring two game-winning goals in the process. De Mujica scored a penalty kick golden goal that delivered Stetson a key 3-2 overtime win at USC Upstate in A-Sun action on October 16.

Ocejo anchored the Stetson back line that registered six shutouts in 19 matches and earned the title A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year to go along with a spot on the A-Sun's First Team. Ocejo came forward to score two goals and hand out three assists for the Hatters as a junior.

The Hatters finished the season 10-5-4 overall and 6-1-1 in A-Sun action, good for second place in the league standings. Stetson will take a 10-match unbeaten streak into the 2012 campaign, which will be its first at the new-and-improved Stetson Soccer Complex. Mendoza and Ocejo anchor a strong cast of slated returnees.
