MACON, Ga. - Three members of Stetson's
men's soccer team were honored by the Atlantic Sun Conference on Tuesday
afternoon. Seniors Jonathan Mendoza,
Luis Ocejo, and Kai Eckenrode all earned postseason accolades from the league
for their performances during the 2012-13 campaign.
Mendoza
earned First Team All-Atlantic Sun Conference honors for the third straight
season. An NSCAA Third Team All-American
last year, the Stetson midfielder scored one goal and tallied a team-high three
assists for a total of five points in 2012-13.
Mendoza finished his career with 22 assists, the second most in Stetson
history.
"It
was a very well deserved award," Head Coach T. Logan Fleck said. "He fought courageously through injury
throughout the year, and showed why he has a very good future in front of
him. He overcame every challenge in
front of him, and anyone with a lesser attitude would have probably let it
defeat him, but Jonny came and played his heart out in every single match over
the last four years."
Ocejo
was named All-Atlantic Sun for the second season in a row, earning Second Team
honors as a senior. The anchor of the
Stetson defense, he has also earned NSCAA All-Region and Scholar All-American
honors in the past. This season Ocejo
has added second straight Capital One Academic All-District accolades after
scoring one goal out of the back in 2012-13.
"What
a great example of someone who provides excellence in the classroom and on the
field," Fleck said of Ocejo. "He has a
championship to his credit during his time at Stetson, and has shown great
leadership for the program. The honor is
well deserved, and we will miss him very much."
Eckenrode
led the Hatters in scoring during his final season at Stetson, scoring five
goals and adding one assist for 11 points en route to Second Team All-Atlantic
Sun honors. His three goals in a win
over North Florida marked the first hat trick of his career, and the only one
in the A-Sun this season. Eckenrode
finished his career with 14 goals and 12 assists for a total of 40 points.
"Kai
has done so much for us in the classroom and on the field," Fleck
continued. "A technical wizard, who
shows you how the game can be played at a very high level, Kai scored some very
important goals for Stetson. He will be
missed by this team."
In
addition to their all-conference nods, Ocejo and Eckenrode were also members of
the Atlantic Sun Conference Men's Soccer All-Academic Team, which recognizes
student-athletes who excelled both on and off the field during the 2012-13
season. Only 11 players in the league earned
this recognition, and Ocejo was one of only four unanimous selections.
