The Stetson women's tennis team (1-0) defeated Flagler
College (0-1) by a score of 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Mandy Stoll Tennis
Center. The Hatters won all three doubles matches in addition to the six
singles matches in their season opener.
"It's a great start to our season to be able to earn a convincing win against a good team like Flagler," Director of Tennis Pierre Pilote said on Saturday.
Stetson started the match strong, sweeping all three doubles
matches to take a 1-0 lead. Freshman Andrea Crespo (Valencia, Spain) and junior
Diana Bukajeva (Riga, Latvia) were the first to finish in doubles, defeating
Hanna Goetsching and Thaisa Pereira by a score of 8-2.
Junior Lindsey Cable (Gainesville, Fla.) and freshman
Eveline Lepinay (Quebec City, Quebec) secured the doubles point for Stetson by
defeating Ankia Cohen and Krista Ingrilli 8-2. Senior Sara Lazarevic (Calgary,
Alta.) and senior Jen Miller (Tampa, Fla.) finished the sweep by defeating
Esther Santiago and Barbora Sebkova 9-8 (4).
"Our doubles team played well, but I know that we still have room for significant improvement," Pilote said.
In singles play, Cable got the Hatters off to a good start
by defeating Gabby Scammacca 6-0, 6-0. She was followed shortly thereafter by
Miller, who defeated Anika Cohen 6-2, 6-0. Clarke Tatje then defeated Pereira
6-0, 6-3 to secure the victory for Stetson.
At the number one singles position, Crespo was victorious
over Goettsching in her first ever match as a collegian, winning it 6-1, 6-2. "It's
special, and I was excited for the first match, since I am a freshman," Crespo
said following the match. "We all did a really good job today and it's a really
good start to the season."
Bukajeva won her match, defeating Sebkova 6-4, 6-2, and Lazarevic
finished the sweep for the Hatters by winning 6-3, 6-1 over Santiago.
Stetson is back in action next Saturday, Feb. 9, against
Charleston Southern. The match is set to begin at 12:00 p.m. at the Mandy Stoll
Tennis Center.
