Softball Wins Seventh Straight, 9-1 vs. B-CU

Sophomore Jessica Griffin went 4-for-4 with a walk-off two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead Stetson past Bethune-Cookman 9-1 Wednesday night at Patricia Wilson Field.

With the victory, the Hatters improved to 22-5 on the season and extended their season-high win streak to seven.

"I thought our defense played well, we hit the ball throughout the line-up, and our pitchers got the job done," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said.

Jessica Griffin got her night off to a good start with a two-run double in the bottom of the first inning to give Stetson an early 4-0 lead.  She also singled in the third and fifth innings before coming up with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the sixth.

"The pitch was outside, and I usually had been letting those go, but now to finally swing at it and see a result is a good feeling," Griffin said.

The left-handed hitter dropped a soft liner just inside the left field foul line allowing Meza and Owen to sprint home with the winning runs.

"Jessica's been coming on stronger and stronger, and I think tonight was good for her confidence," Frank Griffin said.

After collecting 42 combined hits in last weekend's conference series at ETSU, the Hatters picked up where they left off, registering 16 more hits against the Wildcats (10-22) on Wednesday.

Stetson scored four runs in the first, two in the second, and another in the third to jump out to a 7-0 lead.  Amanda Grimaldo notched a two-run double, Demi Meza and Meredith Owen each drove in runs, and Kayla Drury got a friendly bounce off the top of the rightcenter field fence for her second home run of the season.

Griffin (4), Drury (3), Meza (2), Grimaldo (2), and Brittany Hawn (2) each recorded multi-hit games for the Hatters.

Sarah Read and Owen (13-3) each worked three innings in the circle to help lead Stetson to its 16th home victory of the season.

Stetson will return to A-Sun play this weekend as the Hatters host Florida Gulf Coast for a three-game series beginning Saturday at 1 p.m.

Notes: With 70 hits in the last five games, Stetson has raised its team batting average from .297 to .327 ... Courtney Brandt extended her hitting streak to 10 games.
