Hatters Set to Open New Season Sunday at Richmond

Stetson men's basketball opens its 103rd season on Sunday when the Hatters visit Richmond, 5 p.m., at Robins Center. Head coach Corey Williams begins his third season at the helm.

The game is being played as part of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational, which also includes game at West Virginia (Nov. 20) and a pair of game at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas over Thanksgiving weekend.

Once again the Hatters boast one of the youngest squads in America. Last season, Stetson was one of the youngest teams in the country when they opened the season with seven scholarship freshmen. Flash forward 12 months and the Hatters are at it again as the 2015-16 version features a roster sans seniors. Stetson is one of just eight teams with no seniors. The others are Fairleigh Dickinson, LIU-Brooklyn, New Mexico State, Niagara, Northern Colorado, Providence and St. Mary's.

Not only will the Hatters be young in 2015-16, they'll also be somewhat undersize, with just two players on the roster 6-8 or taller. Williams says that Stetson's lack of size can work to its advantage.

“I look at Villanova,” said Williams. “They've always played 4-out, 1-in. Even though we're guard-oriented we're still going to get the ball inside to our post players. You have to be tough. We can't take the easy way out. Sometimes it's so easy to take a jump shot instead of driving to the basket and get into the heart of the defense and make the defense collapse and find the shooters. We want to make sure our guys understand the difference between taking a three-pointer when its available and being aggressive by getting into the paint and making something happen for their teammates.”

The Spiders, who dropped their season-opener to James Madison on Friday night, return four starters and nine letter winners overall from last season's squad which posted a 21-14 overall record and won a pair of games in the NIT. Two players -- Terry Allen and ShawnDre Jones -- were named to the Atlantic 10s preseason all-conference team. The Spiders were picked to finish sixth in the 14-team league.

Sunday's game is being broadcast live on WSBB AM 1230 in New Smyrna Beach and AM 1490 in DeLand, or on the WSBB app for iPhone and Android devices. Fans can also follow the game via live stats, and in-game updates will be provided on Twitter @StetsonMBB.
