Men's Hoops Inks Prep Stars Cockfield, Goodman

DeLAND—Ty Cockfield (Gainesville, Ga.), who led the state of Georgia in scoring as a senior, and Leo Goodman (Las Vegas, Nev.), one of the top prep school players in Arizona, have each signed a National Letter-of-Intent to continue their education and basketball careers at Stetson beginning next fall, head coach Corey Williams announced today.

Cockfield is a 6-1, 175-pound combo guard, while Goodman is a 6-5, 210-pound swingman. Williams cited both players' versatility and winning backgrounds as reasons they were recruited to Stetson.

“You want guys who can play multiple positions,” said Williams. “With the addition of players like Ty, Leo and (fall signee) Derick Newton, now we can put a different group of guys on the floor at different times and get similar production. That gives us a lot of flexibility to do what we want to do in the coming years. Plus, they're both really good kids and that's always a bonus.”

As he builds the Stetson program, Williams also likes the fact that both players come from successful programs. Cockfield went 127-9 in four years at Gainesville's Johnson High, and Goodman played this past season at one of the top prep school programs in the country.

“I want guys who like winning and despise losing,” said Williams. “You always want to make sure you have a group of guys who don't want to accept losing. Both Ty and Leo are an excellent addition to what we have coming back.”

An explosive scorer, Cockfield led the state of Georgia in scoring as a senior, averaging 28.0 points per game. He gained national attention in January after scoring 166 points in a four-game span, a stretch which included three 40-point efforts. During his senior year he scored 30 or more points 13 times, including those three 40-point games.

More than just a scorer, Cockfield showed a deft shooting touch as well, making 62 3-pointers while shooting better than 39 percent from beyond the arc as a senior. He also averaged 4.4 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game.

“He knows how to get to the basket and how to score in transition,” said Williams. “He can create for himself but he also can create for his teammates. Ty has a great feel for the game. Offensively, he gives you the scoring power that you need to put points up on the board. He knows how to pass and help players get shots in the right position. And he has some toughness that should allow him to be a very good defender.”

Cockfield recently completed his senior season at Gainesville's Johnson High School in suburban Atlanta, helping lead the Knights to a 29-1 record, conference and regional championships and a No. 1 state ranking. Johnson lost its only game of the year in the state quarterfinals.

Cockfield was a unanimous first-team AAAA All-State selection this past season, receiving honors from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Georgia Sportswriters Association and other outlets. He chose Stetson over Chattanooga, Cleveland State, Florida A&M, Georgia Southern, Robert Morris, Western Kentucky and others.

Goodman comes to Stetson after spending a post-graduate year at Elite 1 Academy in Phoenix, Ariz. While at Elite 1, Goodman ranked as the No. 3 post-grad player Arizona and the No. 13 senior overall by PrepHoopsArizona.com.

“Leo is a young man who I thought had great size and length for his position,” said Williams. “His ability to score is his strong suit. He can make mid-range jumpers and step out to the three-point line and be successful. His size gives him the ability to be able to post-up smaller guards. He can also rebound for his position.

“While Leo is more than capable of playing the 2-guard spot, for us he's a 3-man. With his size in our league, he fits right into that position and we needed some size there.”

After spending the first three years of high school at Las Vegas' East Career Technical High School, Goodman played his senior season at Roosevelt High in Eastvale, Calif., where he averaged 16.9 points and 6.6 rebounds per game, earning 1st-team All-Southern California honors and second-team All-State. A 39-percent three-point shooter as a senior, Goodman scored 20 or more points 10 times at Roosevelt, including 33 points in a 70-67 loss to Golden Valley.

Goodman has experience excelling in the Sunshine State, as he earned all-tournament honors at the Kingdom of the Sun Tournament with Roosevelt in 2013. He was the tournament's leading scorer that year, with 83 points in four games.
