Hatters Fall as Upstate Surges to ASUN Win

DeLAND—Stetson's Derick Newton scored a game-high 30 points but USC Upstate closed the game on a 15-6 run as the ASUN-leading Spartans downed the Hatters, 97-86, Saturday at Edmunds Center.

Newton finished 11 of 17 from the field and was perfect on all 5 free throw attempts. It was the sophomore's second 30-point effort of the season, and third of his career. Divine Myles added 18 points for Stetson but no one else scored more than 8 points.

The Hatters (8-13 overall, 1-4 ASUN) led by as many as 13 points in the first half but needed a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Luke Doyle at the end of the half to take a 47-46 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The second half saw seven ties and nine lead changes. Stetson led, 75-73, on a jumper by Newton with 7:12 to play. But the Hatters missed their next seven shots from the field as Upstate surged ahead.

Upstate out-scored Stetson, 15-6, over the game's final 3:38, going 10 for 12 from the free throw line to seal the victory. Overall, the Spartans were 30 of 35 from the free throw line.

Deion Holmes and Mike Cunningham each scored 24 points to lead the Spartans. Michael Buchanan had 18 and Philip Whittington scored 15. Malik Moore chipped in 10 points.

News & Notes
Derick Newton previously reached the 30-point mark with 33 points against Florida A&M in November, and had 30 points against Upstate last season in DeLand … the Hatters lost for just the second time this season when leading at halftime … Upstate entered play shooting just 62.9 percent from the free throw line but converted at an 85.7-percent clip on Saturday.

Quotable
"With three minutes to go in the game we were down by two and then it snowballed on us. Their guys stepped up and made big plays. We got good looks down the stretch but we just didn't finish them. That sums it up. I'm not mad with our offense, I'm just mad we didn't make the crucial shots at crucial times." – Stetson head coach Corey Williams

Up Next
The Hatters continue ASUN play when they visit Jacksonville, 7 p.m., Wednesday.
