Hatters Late Run Falls Short Against Western Kentucky

Shania Meertens records a season-high 12 points, six rebounds and six assists

West Palm Beach, Fla. -- Tashia Brown's game-high 24 points helped lift Western Kentucky to a 66-58 victory over Stetson Saturday afternoon at the West Palm Invitational.

Brittney Chambers and Kennedi Colclough each scored 16 points to lead the Hatters (6-6).

Stetson trailed by seven at the end of the third quarter and by 12 with 5:37 to go, but a 10-2 run pulled the Hatters to within four at the 1:18 mark.  However, the Hilltoppers (7-3) hit six free throws down the stretch to help seal their sixth win in a row.

"I thought we played tough. I thought we battled," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "Western Kentucky is a very good team.  I thought our players battled against a veteran team.  I thought we were in the game and had some chances.  We turned the ball over a little too much in the second half, and I thought that was the difference in the game."

Defensively, Stetson held WKU to 42 percent shooting and 10 points below its season scoring average of 76.8.

"I thought the defense was good," Bria said. "We executed the game plan overall.  Without those turnovers, they probably don't get the points in the second half like they did."

Offensively, Chambers finished with 16 points and eight rebounds in 37 minutes, while Colclough was 8-for-10 from the floor and pulled down six boards in 40 minutes of action.

Shania Meertins registered season-highs of 12 points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals while making her first career start.

"Having Shania on the floor gives us another scorer and somebody else who can run our break," Bria said. "I thought she did a great job and made some really good passes."

The Hatters shot 43 percent from the floor for the game and connected on four 3-pointers.

Stetson will return home to host the 30th Annual Hatter Classic Wednesday and Thursday at the Edmunds Center.  The Hatters will host Richmond at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
