Hatters Complete Sweep at Orange Blossom Classic, Now 9-1

Linda Ross goes 2-for-3 with three runs scored

Lake Buena Vista, Fla. -- Before Stetson's final game at the Diamond 9 Orange Blossom Classic Sunday morning, left fielder Kelsey Waters told assistant coach Jessica Ujvari that she had always wanted to catch a ball headed over the outfield fence.  Ujvari then spent some time practicing that scenario with the outfielders, but her throws never really worked out the way Waters intended.

Waters made the most of her in-game opportunity when she robbed George Washington's Paige Kovalsky of a fourth-inning home run, running into and knocking down the 4-foot temporary fence while holding on the ball.

"I knew the girl that hit it, so I felt a little bit bad, but at the same time it was an awesome catch and I am glad I could help out the team," Waters said.

That catch helped Stetson maintain the lead as the Hatters went on to defeat George Washington 8-3, completing a five-game weekend sweep at ESPN's Wide World of Sports complex.

Tori Perkins (6-1) pitched a complete game and Blake Crews drove in three runs as the Hatters improved to 9-1 on the season.

The Colonials (2-3) trimmed Stetson's 4-0 lead down to 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth, but Perkins retired the side with the tying run stranded on third base.  The Hatters then added four insurance runs in the top of the seventh to break the game open.

"I was little disappointed that we left the bases loaded in the fifth, and it was unusual for us but it happens," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said.  "We never gave up. We came back and scored some runs in the seventh and those were big runs."

Linda Ross was 2-for-3 with three runs scored to help lead the offense, which scored 48 runs on the weekend.  The Hatters hit three sacrifice flies in the game, two by Maggie Fritts and one by Crews.

"Everybody is going up there and swinging the bat," Waters said.  "Our offense is going to be key for us and I am excited to see how the rest of the season goes."

The Hatters have won seven games in a row, scoring eight runs or more in all seven games.  Stetson will host Oakland in a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Griffin on Waters' catch: "It was outstanding.  It reminded me of Lynda Knighton at Jacksonville State 20 years ago catching a ball and running through a chain link fence.  It was a big catch. It stopped their momentum."

Notes: Stetson is off to its best start since 2004 ... Blake Crews leads the ASUN with 17 RBI ... Maggie Fritts is the first Hatter since before 1999 with two sacrifice flies in the same game.
