Hatters Can't Solve Longwood

Stetson sank a season-high 12 three-pointers on Friday but the Hatters couldn't solve Longwood in a 77-63 loss to the Lancers on Jerome Kersey Court in Farmville, Va.

Stetson (3-11) was 12 of 26 from beyond the arc for the night, and that prowess was nearly enough to bring them back from what as at one point a 19-point deficit.

Down 67-48 with 8:15 to play, Stetson eventually closed to within 72-63 on a free throw by Kenny Aninye with 2:35 to go. But the Hatters missed their final three shots from the field as the Lancers (9-5) ran down the clock with each possession and iced the game by going 4 for 4 at the free throw line in the final 49 seconds.

Stetson trailed 36-30 at halftime despite shooting 32 percent from the field in the first half. The Hatters improved that effort to 46 percent in the second half, but the Lancers countered with 52 percent shooting to keep the Hatters at bay for much of the game's final 20 minutes.

Marques Sumner led the Hatters with 14 points on 5 of 12 shooting, including 4 three-pointers. Leo Goodman was the only other Hatter to reach double figures, scoring 12 points on the strength of a 4 for 10 effort from beyond the arc.

Three Lancers reached double figures, led by Sean Flood's 21 points.

Game Notes
  • Friday marked just the second time this season the Hatters have reached double digits in 3-pointers made. The last time came when they sank 11 against Marist on Dec. 8.
  • Sumner reached double figures for the 6th time this season
  • Goodman also has 6 double-digit scoring games this season, and 30 for his career
  • The teams combined to shoot 29 of 58 (50 percent) from 3-point range, and 18 of 48 (37.5 percent) from inside the arc
  • With all that perimeter play, it's not surprising to see just 24 total free throw attempts between the teams

Up Next
The Hatters are off until after New Year's. Stetson next hosts Edward Waters, 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 3 at Edmunds Center.
