Scott Sallach

Football Ricky Hazel, Associate AD

Former Mississippi State Assistant to Tutor Stetson Quarterbacks

Stetson football coach Roger Hughes announced today the addition of Scott Sallach to his coaching staff.

Sallach, who comes to Stetson from Mississippi State where he most recently coaches the Bulldogs' tight ends, will mentor the Hatters' quarterbacks.

"I am tremendously excited to welcome Scott to our staff," Hughes said. "I have known Scott for many years, both as a friend and as a coach. He is a high quality individual and an outstanding football coach."

Sallach spent eight seasons at Mississippi State where he worked for new Florida head coach Dan Mullen. Sallach and Mullen were teammates at Ursinus College in Pennsylvania.

While having close ties to Mullen, Sallach also has a long history with Hughes, having served as receivers and special teams coach at Dartmouth with the head Hatter before joining Hughes at Princeton, serving as receivers and quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator.

Sallach's role at Stetson will be as both quarterbacks coach and director of football operations, a position previously held by Nolan Behrns.

"I am taking some of Nolan's former responsibilities and spreading them out among the rest of the staff," Hughes said.

Sallach was a vital part of a staff that helped MSU reach a school-record six straight bowl games and back-to-back seasons of at least nine victories for the first time in program history. Twenty team single-game and single-season school offensive records were broken during his tenure in Starkville.

Hughes, who previously served as the Hatters' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in addition to his duties as head coach, said the time had come for him to take a step back from the day-to-day duties those positions require in order to focus on the entire team.

"The fact of the matter is that I was doing too much," Hughes said. "When we first started the program I had to do a lot because I had a lot of first-time coaches. As the program has matured, we have gained the ability to hire and retain higher quality coaches. Because of the quality of the staff I am able to assemble, my role can change now.

"I just felt that the quarterbacks were getting short-changed a little because, as head coach, I get pulled away for a lot of different things. I just couldn't devote the amount of time that I thought was fair to them to make them as good as they could be. While that is the most fun part of what I do, for the team, and for those young men, I needed to take a step back."

The highlight of Sallach's time at Mississippi State was working with Malcolm Johnson. From 2011-14, Sallach coached Johnson, who finished his Bulldog career as one of the most productive tight ends in school history. Johnson caught 79 passes for 1,148 yards and 10 touchdowns in his 45 career games.

In 2015, Johnson became the first MSU tight end drafted into the NFL in 12 years.

In addition to his years at Mississippi State, Princeton and Dartmouth, Sallach spent three seasons at Monmouth and one at Hamilton College.

A native of Bound Brook, NJ, Sallach graduated from Ursinus College in 1994 with a bachelor's of science degree in exercise and sport science. He and his wife, Lindi, have two children, Tyler Elizabeth and Rylee Sallach.

With the addition of Sallach, Hughes still has two positions to fill on his coaching staff.
