Hatters Fall Twice to USC Upstate

Lewis, Smith Each Go Yard

DeLand, Fla. -- The Stetson softball team dropped 10-4 and 6-5 decisions to USC Upstate in an ASUN Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field. 

The Spartans (31-16, 10-6 ASUN) scored the first 10 runs in the opener and the final five runs in the nightcap, including four with two outs in the seventh.

Devin Lewis and Ashly Smith each went deep in Game 1 for the Hatters (24-19, 2-9).  Lewis hit a three-run blast to center in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie for the team-lead in home runs with seven.  Smith hit a solo shot to right - her fourth of the season and the 15th of her career, in the bottom of the seventh.

Lewis went 3-for-5 on the day with a double, a home run, and four RBI.  Smith went 4-for-7 with a home run and three runs scored.  Lizzie Shubert and Maggie Fritts also drove in runs.

The teams will play the series finale Sunday at 1 p.m.
