Hatters Place 40 Players on PFL Academic Honor Roll for 2018

The Pioneer Football League recognized a total of 543 student-athletes from its 10 member institutions on the Fall 2018 PFL Academic Honor Roll.

The Stetson football program had 40 players recognized on the list this year. Since Stetson brought football back, a total of 296 Hatters players have been recognized, with an average of 49.3 players per year.

Stetson had its second player to earn the PFL's Academic Honor Roll honor for a fifth time when quarterback Gaven DeFilippo was named to the list. DeFilippo, who is a graduate student in Stetson in pursuit of a MBA, could become the first six-time honor roll selection next year.

In addition to DeFilippo, Stetson had three players – QB Colin McGovern, DE Regis Steighner and K Matthew Sweeney – named to the PFL Academic Honor Roll for the fourth time and four others – DB Jackie Jay Johnson, DB Peter Katz, K Jonny Messina and OL Jacob Sullivan – selected for a third time.

The PFL saw more than 500 student-athletes recognized on its honor roll for a sixth consecutive year. The University of Dayton (79) led the way once again with Drake University (63), Butler University (63) and Valparaiso University each placing at least 60 student-athletes on the honor roll. In addition, Marist College (57) and Valparaiso placed a record number of student-athletes on the league's honor roll.

Pioneer Football League athletic director and coaches established the honor roll in 2001 as a way to recognize the league's outstanding student-athletes. The academic honor roll consists of student-athletes who participated in football at member institutions during the fall semester and posted a 3.0 grade-point average or higher during the semester while enrolled full-time in accordance with NCAA rules.
