Hatters Strand 16 Runners in 5-0 Loss to Siena

Stetson spotted visiting Siena four runs Saturday night at Melching Field, thanks to five first inning walks, and the Hatters were never able to recover, falling to the visiting Saints 5-0.

The loss drops Stetson to 0-5 on the year, the first time since 2009 for a Hatters team to go winless in its first five games. Siena improved to 1-3 on the season.

Stetson junior Mitchell Senger (0-2) retired the first Siena hitter of the night on a fly ball before walking the next five Saints in a row. The five walks matched his career high, which was set in his season debut last week.

Senior Vlad Nunez came on in relief and got the Hatters out of the inning, but not before surrendering a two-run bloop single to Matt Hamel.

Nunez and Stetson freshmen Daniel Paret and Antonio Knowles allowed just one more run, on five more hits the rest of the night. That run came off Paret in the fourth inning on three hits. The left-hander settled in from there, striking out nine over his five innings of work.

Offensively, the Hatters had runners on base virtually all night, but were never able to get a timely hit to drive any runs home. Stetson left a total of 16 runners on base despite getting just five hits in the game. A trio of Siena pitchers combined to allow eight walks while also hitting three batters. The group also recorded 10 strikeouts, six of them looking.

Austin Bogart continued to swing a hot bat for the Hatters, picking up a pair of hits, including a first inning double. He reached base four times in the game but went down swinging with two out and two on in the fifth inning.

Siena starter Tommy Miller (1-0) scattered four hits and walked four in six innings of work, with eight strikeouts, to get the win. Reliever Arlo Marynczak came on in the seventh, but was lifted after loading the bases with two outs on a walk and two hit batters.

Freshman Mike McCully came on to get the Saints out of that frame with a fly ball and then worked the final two innings to earn the save. Stetson put two runners on base in the eighth and then loaded them again in the ninth but stranded all five runners.

The Hatters and Saints will be back at Melching Field Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. for the second game of a four-game series. Sophomore right-hander Robbie Peto will make his second start for Stetson and will square off against Siena junior right-hander Brendan White.
