Hatters Capture Three Medals at FIRA

Stetson women's rowing took home a gold, silver and bronze medal last weekend at the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships in Sarasota.

The Hatters' Freshman 4 boat of Ashley Winans, Joselin Valle, Ari Jimenez, Katie Scarlett and coxswain Emme McNabb captured gold by blowing away the competition. Stetson finished more than 14 seconds ahead of second-place Florida in the eight-boat field.

"Our team was excited to demonstrate the hard work they have put in this semester, Stetson assistant coach Stephen Harris said. "It is hard to believe how far we have come from one year ago, at the inaugural Sunshine State Invite and 2018 FIRA Championships.

"The main focus this semester has been "one day, one step at a time". The women really illustrated that by performing well in heats on Friday, then coming back to the race course on Saturday. They made multiple changes which led to improvement for each crew on day 2."

Stetson also medaled in the Varsity 4 (silver) and the 2- (bronze). Overall, Stetson head coach Katie Thurstin was pleased with her squad.

"Our crews came together nicely this weekend," Thurstin said. "We've been honing in on the best race strategy for our crews and it was great seeing everyone find good rhythm on the water and make boats move; and that's what rowing is all about, making boats go fast.

"I am thankful for all the time, energy and dedication our coaching staff has put in this spring. All of the behind the scenes work is allowing our athletes to shine this semester. It is fun to be an up and coming program and really testing our limits. At the end of the day, it's an exciting time to be a Hatter and I am proud of how everyone competed and supported each other this weekend."

The Hatters also had three boats race in the Sunshine State Invitational the same weekend in Sarasota. The Varsity 8, 2nd Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 all reached the Petite Final, and each finished 6th.

Up next for the Hatters are the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships, April 19-20, in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
