Jacksonville, Fla. – Stetson's offensive woes continued on Saturday night as a quartet of Jacksonville pitchers combined to hold the Hatters just one run on three hits to take a 2-1 series-clinching victory.
The teams will play the final game of the weekend series on Sunday with the first pitch moving up an hour to noon.
Stetson managed just one hit through the first eight innings on Saturday as JU starter A.J. Jones went six innings, allowing the one run on just one hit, before Nick Love worked two solid innings.
The Hatters (21-28, 9-10) threatened in the ninth inning, getting singles from
Eric Foggo and
Andrew MacNeil off reliever Trent Palmer. Jacksonville (28-23, 11-9) went back to the pen for closer Zach Bryant, and he did his job, getting
Austin Bogart on strikes to end the game, earning his 10
th save of the year.
With the loss, the Hatters fall to 9-9 on the season in one-run games, the most one-run games for any team in the nation.
The Dolphins picked up right where they left off on Friday, banging out a pair of hits in the first inning, scoring a run on a ground out for an early 1-0 lead.
That was where the game stayed as Jones and Stetson starter
Daniel Paret (4-3) dueled over the early innings.
The Hatters finally got on the board in the fourth.
Kyle Ball battled with Jones, fouling two balls off his foot, before drawing a walk. He moved up on a ground ball by
Jorge Arenas and then scored on a single by Foggo, the first hit of the day for Stetson.
After putting runners on base in every inning against Paret, JU finally got a second run home in the seventh. Duncan Hunter walked to open the frame, moved up on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single to right by Dakota Julylia.
The Dolphins threated to add to that lead in the eighth when the first two hitters reached on a single and a walk. Freshman
Danny Garcia came on out of the pen for the Hatters, getting a strikeout and a double-play grounder to avoid further damage.
Paret allowed the two JU runs while scattering eight hits over seven-plus innings of work. He walked three and struck out eight. Jones allowed just the one run on one hit over six innings with three walks and five strikeouts.
