UAB Edges Stetson 49-48

Late Free Throws Sink Hatters

DeLand, Fla. -- Margaret Whitley hit 3 free throws with 1 second remaining on the clock to lead UAB to a 49-48 victory over Stetson Friday afternoon on the first day of the Hatter Classic.

The Hatters (2-2) called timeout and advanced the ball to the front court, but Megan Vincent's shot at the buzzer rolled off the side of the rim.

The Blazers (4-1) led 32-27 early in the third quarter when the Hatters rattled off a 13-0 run to grab a 40-32 lead. 

In the fourth quarter, Shamari Tyson's 3-pointer gave Stetson a nine-point advantage with 6:54 to play, but UAB chipped away down the stretch before taking the lead in the final second.

Jamiya Turner led the Hatters with 13 points, while Tyson scored 12.  Day'Neshia Banks and Tippy Robertson chipped in eight points apiece.

Whitley scored 15 points to lead the Blazers.

Stetson shot just 27 percent from the floor and 25 percent from the arc, although the Hatters did hit six 3-pointers in the second half.  UAB shot 30 percent overall.

Stetson owned a 46-38 advantage on the boards.  Tonysha Curry pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds, while Banks added nine boards.

The Hatter Classic continues at 1 p.m. Saturday with UAB facing Abilene Christian.  On Sunday, the Hatters will tip-off against Abilene Christian at 11 a.m.

  • Stetson's 13-0 scoring run was its largest of the season
  • The game featured seven ties and five lead changes
  • Jamiya Turner has scored in double figures all four games
  • Defensively, Stetson held UAB to 23 points below their season scoring average
  • The Hatters have made 8 or more 3-pointers three of the four games this season
