Athletic Training Staff Back to Full Strength

After several challenging months of transition, the Stetson Athletics Sports Medicine department is back at full strength with the addition of Andrew Cheney and Larry Bell.
 
Cheney and Bell both joined the Sports Medicine staff for the Hatters at the start of the spring semester.
 
Bell came to Stetson, via partnership with Advent Health, from Edward Waters College in Jacksonville. He spent three and a half years as the head athletic trainer for the Tigers while, at the same time, earning a Master of Science degree in Sport and Exercise Psychology from Adams State University in Alamosa, Colo.
 
He received his undergraduate degree from Valdosta State University's Athletic Training Education Program in 2006, earning a Bachelor's of Science degree in Sports Medicine/Athletic Training. While at Valdosta State as a student, he worked with Blazers baseball and men's basketball teams while also working with the student-athletes at Lowndes High School.
 
He began his career as an Athletic Trainer at Seminole High School in Sanford where he was a teacher in the physical education department and Academy of Health Careers while simultaneously serving the student-athlete population on campus.
 
At Stetson, Bell's primary sport responsibilities are with the indoor volleyball and women's rowing teams.
 
Cheney came to Stetson from Coastal Carolina University where he spent two years as an Intern Athletic Trainer with the Chanticleer football and beach volleyball teams. He was a part of the Sun Belt Co-champion, and undefeated regular season, CCU football team in 2020.
 
In, 2018, Andrew spent six weeks as a Summer Intern Athletic Trainer with the Seattle Seahawks, working training camp and the preseason.
 
A native of Mountain Home, Idaho, Cheney completed his undergraduate education at Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Wash. He received two Bachelor of Science degrees at EWU, one in Athletic Training and the other in Exercise Science. During his studies, he worked as an Athletic Training Student, mainly with the football and women's soccer programs. He was a part of EWU's Football Big Sky Championship in 2017.
 
He completed his graduate studies at South Dakota State University in 2019, receiving a Master's of Science in Sport and Recreation Administration. He was a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer at SDSU working with football his first year and track and field and cross country his second year.
 
Cheney is a BOC Certified Athletic Trainer who is licensed in Florida. He is Rocktape Functional, Movement Technique Basic/Performance Certified, KAATSU Blood Flow Restriction Certified, IDEA Training Fascia for Function Certified, CPR/AED Certified and is an IASTM Practitioner.
 
Cheney works with the Hatters' football and men's tennis teams. He and his fiancée, Julianna Johnson, a native of Olympia, Wash., reside in DeLand.
 
With Bell and Cheney on board, the Stetson Sports Medicine staff has a full corps of 10 certified Athletic Trainers available to ensure Hatters student-athletes have the best care available during the spring semester. The Sports Medicine department also has two certified nutritionists and has access to the best professional medical staff available through partnerships with Dr. John Hill at West Volusia Family & Sports Medicine and Dr. Mark Hollmann at Florida Orthopaedic Associates as well as with the staff at Advent Health.
