DELAND, Fla. - The Stetson University softball team was upended in a doubleheader by visiting North Florida on Saturday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field to clinch the ASUN series against the Hatters. The Ospreys won the first game 14-1, while a controversial play in the second game allowed them to take control and win it, 7-3.
The two teams will finish the three-game conference series on Sunday with a single game starting at 1 pm.
North Florida (39-11, 16-4) used its entire lineup to fuel its offense in Game 1, as the Ospreys scored five times in the second, highlighted by a pair of home runs, and eight times in the fourth, when 14 Ospreys went to the plate. They also took a 1-0 lead in Game 2 on an RBI single by Savannah Channell in the first.
Stetson (19-28, 8-9 ASUN) fought back and took a 2-1 lead in the third as the Hatters loaded the bases before
Lizzie Shubert drew a one-out walk to knot the contest. That chased UNF starter Morgan Clausen for Game 1 winner Halle Arends.
Jordyn Stanfill followed with her own one-out walk that scored
Brianna Clary and gave the Hatters the lead.
In the fourth, Abi Annett tied the game with a home run and then, with two outs, UNF had runners on first and second. UNF's Kayla Harper singled through the left side, and Stetson right fielder
Alyssa Gilman had a perfect throw home that Stanfill took and applied the tag for the apparent third out. However, the call was safe, and as home plate umpire turned to start a conversation with Stetson's head coach, another Osprey raced home. Two batters later, Paige Pfent launched a three-run home run and instead of it being tied at 2-2, UNF led 7-2.
Dylan Anthony added a pinch-hit, solo home run for the Hatters in the sixth, her second of the year, to make it 7-3. SInce 1997, only seven Hatters have ever hit a pinch-hit home run with the last being Amanda Nikhazy on March 2, 2019 against Mount St. Mary's.
Kami Eppley had two of Stetson's five hits in Game 1 and scored the lone run on
Marissa Baxter's RBI single. Clary and
Danielle Diaz each had two hits in the second, as Clary notched her team-leading 14th of the year and now sits three hits shy of 100 in her career. For Diaz, it was her ninth of the season, second most on the team.Â
