JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - The Stetson University women's tennis team registered a 6-1 victory over Jacksonville State on Sunday afternoon at JSU Tennis Courts. However, the ASUN match was more contested than the final score which improved the Hatters to 16-2 on the year, tying the mark for the most wins after 18 matches in school history.
Stetson did roll through its opponents in the doubles matches, with
Alanna DiFrancesco and
Elodie Foster (No. 1) and
Anais Gabriel and
Noa Cohen (No. 3) winning their respective flights 6-2, while
Nadejda Maslova and
Cheri Darley were leading 5-4 before going unfinished.
Darley and DiFrancesco, each with just one loss this season, also won in straight sets early to give the Hatters a 3-0 lead. Darley (No. 3) won her 12th straight match, 6-2, 7-5, to improve to 15-1 this season, 10-0 at flight 3. DiFrancesco, who finished her flight 4 match shortly after, 6-1, 7-5, is now 16-1 on the season, including an 8-1 mark at No. 4.
The team win was secured by
Noa Cohen at flight 5, who remained unbeaten in 2022 at 16-0 (8-0 at No. 5) with her hard-fought 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) victory. Her 16-match winning streak is fourth all-time in school history, with Mandy Stoll's 20-match streak in 1986 next in her sights.
With the match in hand, two of the remaining singles matches - Gabriel (No. 2) and
Laia Pasini (No. 6) - went to a third set, super tiebreaker to determine the winner. Gabriel won hers, and is now 11-5 this year, while Pasini suffered a loss. Maslova needed a full third set, and the tiebreaker, to post her 10th win of the year to finish the day, improving to 10-3 at flight 1 this season.
The Hatters are now tied with the 2011 squad for the most wins in 18 matches at the school, while the 16 overall wins is tied for the sixth-most ever at Stetson. The most wins ever recorded by a team is 18 (1986, 2010, 2014) followed by the 2006 and 2011 squads that won 17.
Meanwhile, in the ASUN, Stetson is now 4-1 and among a log-jam of five teams that currently have just one loss in league play - Liberty (5-1), FGCU, Central Arkansas and North Florida (4-1). The 2022 ASUNÂ Women's Tennis Championship will be a six-team, single elimination tournament held April 22-24 in Fort Myers, Florida.
Stetson has four league matches remaining and will host its final two this weekend, facing Central Arkansas on Friday (April 8) and North Alabama, Sunday (April 10). They both begin at 10 am.
