Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Ricky Hazel, Associate AD

Hatters Fall to FIU 3-1

The Stetson women's soccer team was not able to generate enough of an offensive attack to keep pace with visiting FIU Thursday night at the ATC, falling to the Panthers 3-1.

Stetson falls to 1-2 on the season with the loss while FIU picked up its first win to improve to 1-2.

It was a story of missed opportunities for the Hatters, who had six corner kicks in the game, but failed to convert on any.

"We have to be able to finish when we have those opportunities, and we didn't do that again tonight," Hatters coach Chris Bergmann said. "We have to finish when we get chances."

FIU got on the board first just 6:30 into the game with freshman Catherine Rapp scored her first collegiate goal on an assist from fellow freshman Chinatsu Kaio.

The game stayed 1-0 until late in the first half when freshman Zoie Weinberger was in the perfect spot and converted a rebound from a shot by another freshman, Alexis Smith, that was blocked by FIU keeper Ithaisa Vinoly, for her first collegiate goal.

The Panthers used a two-goal flurry just over 10 minutes into the second half to put the game out of reach for the Hatters. Rapp scored her second goal of the game on an assist from Noemi Paquin at the 56:23 mark and then Nikole Solis scored just a minute later, at the 57:38 mark.

Stetson managed just seven shots, five on goal, against the Panthers as Vinoly had four saves. Stetson keeper Sarah Grimmett was much busier as she had 12 saves on 15 FIU shots on goal. Overall, the Panthers were credited with 22 shots.

Stetson will try to even its record on Sunday when the Hatters go on the road for the first time to face Mercer. That game, in Macon, is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
