DELAND, Fla. - The Stetson Hatters stepped out of ASUN play to welcome the USF Bulls to the MAC on Tuesday night, and saw their six-game win streak snapped thanks to a 13-6 loss.
USF (18-28) jumped to an early lead behind a six-run first inning, but the Hatters countered with three of their own in the bottom of the frame. Stetson (27-18) loaded the bases with walks to shortstop
Lorenzo Meola and left fielder
David Bermudez sandwiched around a hit-by-pitch to second baseman
Yohann Dessureault. First baseman
Landon Moran roped a single to deep centerfield to drive in Meola before designated hitter
Daniel Labrador drew a walk to plate Dessureault. A sacrifice fly from right fielder
Jayden Hylton would plate Bermudez to cut the Bulls lead to 6-3.
Both teams would threaten to add on over the next few innings, but neither side would be successful until USF tacked on three runs in the top of the fourth inning and a single run in the fifth to take a 10-3 lead.
The Hatters would get two of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth, which Dessureault lead off with a double down the right field line. After a fly-out to move the runner to third and a strike out, catcher
Daniel Labrador narrowly missed his ninth home run of the season, settling for an RBI triple off the 392-sign on the centerfield wall to drive in Dessureault. The Stetson backstop would then come in to score on an RBI single through the right side by designated hitter
Trae Harmon, cutting the USF lead in half, 10-5.
A sacrifice fly from Bermudez would score Meola in the sixth inning before USF used an RBI single in the seventh to push the lead back to five runs, 11-6.
Two more USF runs in the eighth gave the Bulls a 13-6 lead and ended the game's scoring.
Dessureault, who set the single-season HBP record over the weekend, added on on the night, wearing three pitches to go along with a pair of hits. The Hatters also got a 2-for-4 performance from Harmon, his second multi-hit game of the season.
TJ Melani was the lone Stetson pitcher to turn in a scorless performance on the mound, striking out one Bull in 1.1 hitless innings.
The Hatters, who are currently tied for second in ASUN play with a 15-6 record, make the trip to Fort Myers for a huge conference series at FGCU this weekend. The Eagles, who have spent much of the season in the Top-25, currently lead the ASUN with a 16-5 record. The series will kick off at 6:30 PM Friday night, before continuing at 2:00 PM on Saturday, and wrapping up at 1:00 PM on Sunday.
