CAGUAS, Puerto Rico – The Stetson Hatters opened the 2025 season with a 10-6 victory over the UConn Huskies on Friday afternoon. The Hatters overcame a 6-5 deficit in the sixth inning, rallying to secure the win. Stetson initially built a 5-0 lead, highlighted by Jayden Hylton's two-run homer, making him the first Division I player to hit a home run this season.
Jake Gorelick, in his first appearance since March 2023, earned the win out of the bullpen, pitching 2.2 innings and allowing one run on five hits. He struck out four and issued no walks. James Hays, making his debut for Stetson, started the game and struck out five over 4.1 innings, giving up four runs on three hits and four walks. Zane Coppersmith closed the game with a shutout inning and a strikeout.
The Hatters struck first in the second inning, plating two runs, including one on a double off the right-field wall by junior Evan Griffis. The Huskies were unable to score in response, and Stetson added three more runs in the third, capped by Hylton's two-run homer, bringing the lead to 5-0. Hylton's home run marked his third consecutive Opening Day homer.
By the seventh inning, UConn had erased the Hatters' lead and taken a 6-5 advantage. However, Stetson quickly regained control, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Two of those runs came off a two-run single through the right side by sophomore catcher Salvador Alvarez, putting Stetson back in front, 8-6.
The Hatters added two more insurance runs in the eighth, thanks to a two-run double by senior Yohann Dessureault, scoring Isaiah Barkett and Lorenzo Meola, and pushing the lead to 10-6.
Stetson pitchers faced 41 UConn hitters, allowing four ground balls and 11 fly balls while striking out 10. The Hatters drew eight walks, with Hylton leading the offense by going 1-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs. Landon Russell stole two bases, helping Stetson go a perfect 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts.
The Hatters will return to action tomorrow at the same time to face the Penn State Nittany Lions in Puerto Rico.
