DeLAND, Fla. – Stetson pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts on Tuesday night, but the Hatters fell 6-1 to No. 8 Florida at Melching Field.
Senior Dylan Jacobs got the start and tossed three hitless innings, allowing two walks while striking out two. However, junior Ethan Salak took the loss in relief as Stetson dropped to 4-4 on the season. Ty Van Dyke, who started last year's home win over the Gators, struck out five over 2.1 innings out of the bullpen.
Offensively, junior Jordan Taylor drove in Stetson's lone run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning, scoring Landon Moran to give the Hatters an early lead. Florida responded with two runs, taking a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh.
Stetson appeared to tie the game when Salvador Alvarez's infield single allowed Evan Griffis to cross the plate. However, after a replay review, the umpires overturned the call, ruling Alvarez out and nullifying the run. Head Coach Steve Trimper announced that Stetson would play the remainder of the game under protest.
Florida added four insurance runs to seal the win. If Stetson's protest is upheld, the game would be restarted from the moment of the disputed call. The two will meet again regardless when the Hatters travel to Gainesville on Tuesday, April 15.
The Hatters will look to bounce back this weekend as they host Indiana and Mount St. Mary's at Melching Field. The series opens with two games against the Hoosiers, beginning Friday, Feb. 28, at 6:30 p.m. as part of Bark at the Park night.
