Charlotte, N.C. –
Amber Chumley,
Emily Santana, and
Ava Braswell led Stetson to a split against Queens on Friday, March 28. The Hatters dropped the first game 4-2, despite a standout performance by
Addison Foster, who recorded three hits. Stetson bounced back in the second game, hitting three home runs to support Braswell, who earned her seventh win in an 8-2 victory.
In the first game, freshman
Hayley Arnold took the mound for Stetson, pitching four innings and allowing three runs on four hits and two walks, with two strikeouts in the loss. The Hatters struck first in the top of the first inning when Foster tripled and scored on a single to short by English. Queens responded in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead and extended it to 3-1 in the fourth. Stetson managed to pull within 3-2 after Chumley scored on a wild pitch, but they were unable to tie the game, falling 4-2. Foster finished with three hits, including a triple, while English went 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.
After dropping the first game, Stetson responded with power in game two, hitting three home runs. Braswell started in the circle and delivered a stellar performance, tossing four shutout innings, allowing three hits and one walk, and striking out three to earn the win.
The Hatters quickly took control in the second game. Foster and
Kami Eppley singled back-to-back before advancing on a wild pitch. English then singled to short, bringing in Foster, and a wild pitch allowed Eppley to score, giving Stetson a 2-0 lead. Braswell retired six of her first seven batters, keeping the Hatters on top.
In the third inning, Foster led off with a bunt single, then stole second. Eppley walked, and Chumley blasted a three-run home run to make it 5-0. Two batters later, Santana hit a solo shot to left field, extending the lead to six. Braswell worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the third and cruised through the fourth.
Stetson added to its lead in the fifth when Chumley reached first on an infield single, and English followed with the Hatters' third home run of the game, making it 8-0.
Kennedy Temples relieved Braswell in the circle and finished the last three innings as Stetson secured the 8-2 victory.
Chumley went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs, while English also went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Santana had a strong performance as well, going 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk, and an RBI.
