FAQs

Do I need prior rowing experience?
No. You need absolutely NO prior rowing experience. Show up with a great attitude and a good work ethic. We will teach you everything you need to know.

Do I need to know how to swim?
Boats rarely flip, but if one does, all rowers and coxswains need to be comfortable in water.  So you need to know how to float or tread water. This is something we discuss at length with each prospective member of the team. We always do a swim test before you’re allowed on the water.

What is the practice schedule? I’ve heard rowers practice really early in the morning.
Most of our novice practices take place in the afternoon, but a few practices are held in the morning. We recommend you attend as many practices as possible, however, we understand scheduling issues may prevent you from attending every practice. Ideal class schedules are 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. with select evening classes between 6-9 p.m.

I have some afternoon classes. Can I still join the team?
Of course! We understand that when you decided to attend Stetson you were not planning on rowing. For the fall semester, it is highly encouraged that you attend practice every day.  Prior to registering for spring classes you will be given the spring practice schedule so you can plan your academic schedule accordingly. *see schedule note above

Where is the boathouse?
The Stetson Boathouse and the soon-to-be-opened Sandra Stetson Aquatic Center is located at 2636 Alhambra Ave., about 15 minutes from campus. Click here for directions.

What type of student-athlete is Stetson Rowing looking for?
Our novice rowers come from all different backgrounds. However, those who are successful display many of the following qualities:
  • Positive attitude
  • Good teammate, committed to training and to academics
  • Able to manage challenges
  • Willing and able to create a positive environment

Will my grades be affected by the time commitment?
Many of our team members are well above a 3.0. Our athletes have a wide range of majors – from Business to Health Sciences. Although it might seem challenging as a freshman, having a more structured day can help keep you focused and on-task. The coaching staff and athletic department support staff are not only here to help you be successful on the water, we are here to help get you prepared for life after college.

Why should I try rowing?

What are some of the benefits of being a varsity athlete at Stetson
Our student athletes put in a lot of hard work and time representing Stetson University. The athletic department supports that commitment through a variety of different ways to ensure our student-athletes are able to train and compete at the highest levels.

All Rowing student-athletes receive:
  • Stetson athletic apparel to wear for practice and competitions
  • Access to Sports Medicine facilities and full-time certified athletic trainers for all athletic related injuries and health issues
  • Access to Stetson Athletics academic and support staff, including counselors, tutors, mentors resume-building workshops, and leadership training
  • An opportunity to compete at the highest level of collegiate sports
  • An opportunity to earn an athletic scholarship to help pay for your education
What can I do this summer to prepare?
Work out! We will ease you in slowly, but being diligent about your physical conditioning will be an asset.
  • Biking, running, swimming, climbing, kayaking, and rowing (if you have access)
  • Planks/ab exercises
  • Body weight squats
  • The rowing stroke uses almost every muscle group in your body, so anything that will enhance your overall physical fitness is great!
  • Primary focus should be core, hips, leg strength
Are you a shorter and lighter athlete?
If so, you should be a coxswain. These are the individuals who steer the boat and make calls for the rowers. As a coxswain, you are an influential part of the team. Coxswain is an athlete and coach in the boat. There is a significant leadership component to being a coxswain.
