Former Stetson standout third baseman Mitch Markham enters his ninth season as an assistant coach with the Hatters.
“We elevated Mitch to Associate Head Coach and that is certainly descriptive of his duties”, said head coach Pete Dunn.
In addition to his duties as the Hatters’ hitting instructor, Markham is the third base coach, handles most of the team’s recruiting, scheduling and organizes the team’s travel arrangements. He also works with the infielders.
Under Markham, Stetson’s defense has averaged an impressive .966 fielding percentage over the past seven seasons, including a team-record .972 mark in 2006. Offensively the Hatters have hit .320 or better in five of the past seven years.
Prior to joining the Stetson staff, Markham served as an assistant coach at Indian River Community College under head coach Mike Easom. Before his brief stint at IRCC, Markham spent three seasons as head coach at Gainesville (FL) Eastside High School.
During his two seasons (1994-95) as a player with the Hatters, Markham twice earned All-TAAC honors. He was named First Team All-Conference as a senior when he batted .330 with four home runs and 38 RBI. As a junior in 1994, Markham hit .329 with three home runs and 36 RBI. All together he made just 21 errors in 107 career games.
After his playing career with Stetson came to an end Markham spent one year working in the Cleveland Indians’ front office.
Markham and his wife, Missy, have two sons, seven year old Brady and four year old Jayce.
