Joined the Stetson coaching staff in April of 2018 as running backs coach. He took over offensive play-calling duties during the 2021 season. Will focus on coaching running backs during the 2022 campaign.
A native of Virginia Beach, Va., Richards attended James Madison University where he received a degree in Sports and Recreation Management. During his time in college, he spent time each fall learning the ins and outs of college coaching.Â
Richards got his start as an offensive intern at JMU working for head coaches Everett Withers and Mike Houston from the 2015 season through the summer of 2016. During his time there he worked with running backs coach Zak Kuhr and with quarterback coach Donnie Kirkpatrick.Â
His duties at JMU included serving as the primary play signaler from the sideline, breaking down film on opponents and preparing scouting reports, doing self scouting film breakdowns and working with the scout team defense and special teams units. He also had recruiting duties which included evaluating film, building a recruiting database and organizing recruiting weekends.
While still working on his undergraduate degree, Richards followed Kuhr to Rutgers University, continuing in his role as an assistant running backs coach. His duties during that season were similar in nature to what he did at JMU: signaling plays, preparing scouring reports, overseeing scout team defense and special teams and evaluating recruiting film.
For the 2017 season Richards worked as an assistant quarterbacks coach at Mississippi State, working with both head coach Dan Mullen and quarterbacks coach Brett Elliott. He was the primary offensive play signaler from the sideline for the Bulldogs during a 9-4 season that included a win at Texas A&M and a bowl victory over Louisville.
Richards had accepted a graduate assistant position at Texas State before getting the offer to join the Stetson coaching staff for 2018.
