The Wilson Legacy
Named in Honor of Patricia Maxcy Wilson '47
The Stetson University Board of Trustees named the on-campus softball complex Patricia Wilson Field in recognition of the alumna's long-standing support of Stetson Athletics.
Patricia Maxcy Wilson, a 1947 Stetson graduate, and her husband, Pat Wilson '49, donated $1 million to name a newly built residence hall on campus. With construction of the softball complex nearing completion at the time, half of that donation was designated to name the field. The Wilson family has maintained a long history of support for Stetson Athletics, including an initial $750,000 gift toward the Wilson Athletic Center in the 1990s and annual support of women's athletic scholarships.
Built Through Hatter Support
After years of hard work and fundraising, the Hatters began fall practice on their new on-campus field in 2002 before playing the facility's inaugural games during the Grand Opening on Feb. 15, 2003.
While much of the construction was contracted, University staff completed several of the complex's unique features. Griffin and his staff helped build the backstop, dugouts, bullpens and batting cages as well as the lockers and trophy case inside the fieldhouse.
Estimated at more than $1 million, the completely donor-funded facility was made possible through the generosity of more than 600 individuals and businesses.
Home-Field Advantage
A Winning Tradition Since 2003
Stetson won the first 18 games played at Patricia Wilson Field during its inaugural 2003 season and finished the year 27-3 at home. The Hatters followed with a 29-5 home record in 2004 and established a program record with 35 home victories in 2006.
In May 2007, Stetson captured its first Atlantic Sun Tournament Championship and earned the program's first NCAA Tournament berth on its home field. Patricia Wilson Field later hosted the conference tournament from 2007-10 and again in 2018.
