Hatters Knock Off Camels, 67-60
DeLand, Fla. ? A trio of Hatters led the squad to a hard fought 67-60 victory Thursday evening over conference rival Campbell.
With the win, Stetson improves to 3-14 on the year and 3-3 in Atlantic Sun competition. The Camels fall to 3-13 overall and 1-5 in conference competition.
Janene Maclin posted a game-high 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor and grabbed a contest-best eight boards. Sharnesha Smith chipped in 13 points while Kellie Olson added 11 in the win.
Kim Manning had a near double-double with nine points and a game-high eight assists.
The home squad shot a torrid 52.3 percent from the floor in the game, including 58.3 percent in the first half, giving it a 37-23 lead at the half. Stetson also connected on 18-of-25 free throws for a 72 percent clip.
A jumper by Campbell's Letitia Dickson sliced the deficit to just four points with 39 seconds remaining. However, the visitors, who trailed by double digits for much of the second half, could get no closer as Stacia Shepherd hit two foul shots to put the game out of reach at 62-58. Stetson would outscore the visitors by a 5-2 margin in the closing seconds.
Campbell was led by Octavia Blackwell's 15 points. Adrienne Rieley and Dickson also reached double figures, with Rieley finishing with 11 and Dickson 10.
The Hatters return to action on Saturday, Jan. 20, when they host A-Sun rival Gardner-Webb. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. at the Edmunds Center.
