January 25, 2007
Jacksonville, Fla. ? Even with a quick start in the second half, the Hatters could not connect in the end, losing 60-55 at Swisher Gym in Jacksonville, Thursday night.
The Hatters started off with an immediate five point deficit, but quickly got back into the game on a jumper by Kim Manning (Daytona Beach, Fla.). The Dolphins went up by seven on a lay-up by Virginia Gregoire with two and a half minutes remaining. With less than a minute remaining in the half, freshman Stacia Shepherd (Carmel, Ind.) put up a three pointer to bring the Hatters to within four. Less than 35 seconds later, the Dolphins Regina Omoite fired it up from beyond the arc to bring the lead back to seven. As the seconds ticked down, Stetson's Shayna Swinson (Atlanta, Ga.) laid one in allowing the Dolphins to carry only a five point lead into the half, 32-27.
The story of the first half was the second chance points given to Jacksonville. At the end of the first half the Dolphins had 12 second chance points versus the Hatters four. The Hatters went 13-27 from the field while the Dolphins shot just 43 percent in the first half.
Stetson stated off quickly in the second half and tied the game, 32-32 off a three pointer by junior Kellie Olson (Tucson, Ariz.) and a jumper by senior Janene Maclin (Chicago, Ill.). The Hatters forced turnovers and played solid defense, keeping the Dolphins scoreless for the first four minutes of action.
But once again, the Hatters were plagued by a scoring drought. With shots not dropping for Stetson and turnovers, the Hatters went scoreless for five minutes, until a lay-up by Maclin got the Hatters back into action.
The Hatters pulled to within three with one minute remaining. Unable to find the three pointer, the Dolphins took advantage of a turnover and jumped out to a five point lead, taking the win, 60-55.
The Hatters were led by Ayesha Barkley (East Orange, N.J) with 14 points, while senior Janene Maclin followed with 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
The Dolphins were led by Ashley Williams with a double-double, 23 points and 11 rebounds.
Next up the Hatters will travel back to Jacksonville on Saturday to face the North Florida Osprey at 2:00 pm.
