Hatters Baseball Tames Tigers

DeLand, Fla. - Corey Kluber was nearly unhittable in an 8-1 Stetson victory over LSU in front of 2,431 chilly fans at Melching Field at Conrad Park. The Hatters backed up Kluber's performance with three multi-run innings and 11 hits.

Kluber (2-0) walked the first batter he faced, which led to an early run for LSU.  But the right-hander Coppell, Texas quickly settled and retired the next 11 Tigers.  The string was snapped on a two-out error in the fourth inning and was followed by an infield single and a walk to load the bases. LSU's designated hitter Ryan Schimpf worked count full before Kluber struck him out to end the threat.

Stetson's offense gave Kluber ample help.  Shane Jordan led off the bottom of the first with a single, Casey Frawley walked and Braedyn Pruitt drove home Jordan for the tying run.  Brian Pruitt knocked in the lead run one out later.

The Hatters beefed up their advantage in the second.  Kevin Johnson's single preceded a double from Jordan.  Frawley then singled in Johnson and when the ball was misplayed in left field, Jordan came home for a 4-1 lead.

Adam Tindle's 2-RBI double to straightaway center chased LSU starter Charlie Furbush in the fifth inning.  Tindle would later score on a throwing error after a passed ball to put the Hatters ahead 7-1.  Stetson picked up another run in the seventh on Brian Pruitt's RBI single.

Kluber lasted into the seventh.  He allowed only three singles and one run with nine strikeouts before giving way to freshman David Burns with two outs.  In two starts this year Kluber has allowed just two runs in 11 2/3 innings.

Stetson improved to 4-1 while LSU dropped to 3-1.  The series continues Saturday afternoon with a 2:00 first pitch at Melching Field at Conrad Park.
